First Day at CMU

This morning, I got up when Drew left for work. I was a bit nervous, but ready. I kept thinking I am ready. I got this. I can do this. I arrived at the bus stop at IKEA in Robinson. They have a park n ride. I haven’t had to take the bus in so long. I am sure it was weird for Drew too he was driving to Pitt without me for the first time in awhile.

When I got on the bus, I took a seat towards the back and kept my sunglasses on, so  I wouldn’t make eye contact with anyone. When the bus arrived in Oakland, and we were passing by the Starbucks on Forbes, the street you would turn down to go to Posvar Hall, and straight head was the Cathedral. I smiled. I had little tears in my eyes.  I miss the people, but I don’t miss the position. I miss seeing Nancy already.  I miss the familiarity.

When we passed Craig street, I pulled the stop request wire and the bus stopped at CMU’s campus. It was Orientation week, so there were students everywhere. I got off the bus, and walked across the street. My internship supervisor said that he would meet me in front of the Cohon Center. I saw a building that said Cohon Center. I walked towards that building and eventually found an Au Bon Pain. I ordered a Vanilla latte with Soy milk. I haven’t had an Au Bon Pain in so long. I took a seat and changed out of my Nike’s and put on my black ballet flats. Then gathered my things, and walked towards the front. I stood around in awe just looking around. I wanted to take it all in for a minute until I had to meet my supervisor. I heard someone calling my name, and I turned around it was Kate. She is in my program at Pitt. She said, Welcome! I smiled and said, “Think You.” We hugged. She took me downstairs to the office.

When we reached the SLICE office, she said, “Look who I found.” I introduced myself to Jesse and Andrew. Andrew gave me a hug and said, Welcome!  He showed me to my desk

I felt so welcomed! The water bottle was my favorite thing on the desk! It is pink and glittery, for not knowing me, they really know me.  I opened my folder, and read through some of the documents, and turned on my computer and entered in my AndrewID and got settled. I had meetings lined up all week, and trainings. This is when the nerves actually set in.

At lunch, I grabbed food with Kate and we sat at a table and chatted about classes and CMU. After we ate, she had to go upstairs to cover Dawn’s lunch she is the front desk admin in the SLICE office upstairs. I entered the office, and met some more people and we hung out in the lobby, then my next meeting was with Andrew.

In the afternoon, three o’clock came fast! I had to go outside and catch the bus to take me back to Pitt, so I could ride home with Drew. I was excited to see him. I hung out in Hogwarts and caught up on my day planner and browsed through my phone. It was pretty hot and humid outside. I had so much to get used to, but it was a great first day!
