Back to the Gym

This morning Drew woke up not feeling good. He said, his throat was sore. I thought oh great! He is getting sick. I felt bad for him. We parted ways once we got to Oakland. He was feeling off all day. We kept in touch via messenger.

At lunch, I went to the Greek Food Festival with Nancy and Wynn. Last year was my first year going with them. Last year, I waited in line last year for a gyro that took forever! I should have ordered ahead.  Wynn and I both wanted a gyro but were not going to wait in line for it. We went inside to the dining area and placed our order. I ordered a Greek Meatball, and one piece of spanikopita. I tried to maintain my willpower, but I broke down and bought a piece of the pasta flora for desert. I figured I was going to go to the gym tonight anyway.

Once we got our food, we went outside and took a seat at a table. We chatted and ate and talked about the latest things. Before we left Nancy, wanted to buy some Loukomades. They had some to sample. I asked her what they were. She said, “they have a sample try one.” I picked one up that was attached to the stick. I took a bite and said, “Oh my God that tastes so good.” She cracked up laughing. I didn’t buy any. I just wanted one.

When we got back to the office, the carb coma sent in early, but until next year!

After work, I met up with Drew and he looked miserable. I felt so bad for him. We didn’t say much on the way home. I asked if he wanted me to stay with him this evening. He said, no he is just going to go bed. When we got home, he went upstairs and went to bed. I asked him if he wanted me to wake him up when I got home? He said, “Yes.” I got ready to go to the gym.

When I arrived to the gym, I have to admit I was nervous. I was nervous to get back into the routine again. Thankfully it wasn’t too packed. I was able to get on treadmill and not be surrounded by others. I started out at 1.5 incline and 3.5 speed for 5 mins, then kicked up the speed to 4.1 for 2 mins, then ran for a minute at a 5.6 speed. I repeated this formula for 30 mins. I was sweating like a hog. It felt so good.

Once I was done on the treadmill, I did some strength training arms and hips and then I was done for the day. I went home to my sick husband.

When I went home, I got out of the car and saw my neighbor Amy. She invited Drew and I to her house on Saturday. She is having family and friends over for a cook out. I was grateful she offered. I asked her what time? and she said, around 1pm but probably won’t eat until about 4pm. I told her I did have to work at RMU’s commencement that morning, but I would be over after. I told her I am there just for the morning and to get it started, so I should be available, but Drew is sick he has a sore throat and is laid up, but if he can’t make it I still will attend for a bit. I asked her what I could bring and she said a dessert. I can’t go anywhere empty handed.

When I walked into the house, I went upstairs to my sick husband and kissed his forehead. He woke up and I said, “do you want some soup?” he whispered, “Yes.” I went downstairs and made soup, and put some chicken drumsticks in the oven. I felt so bad for him. He looked so sick. While he ate, I told him about Amy’s party on Saturday if he is up to it, but I am not sure we should have Mother’s Day dinner in case you aren’t feeling well. He agreed. After he ate, he went to go lay down. I sat on the couch, while he slept on the floor.

When the chicken was done, I put them on plate to cool down, and put the baking sheet in the sink to soak with hot water and soap. I ate a piece of chicken and walked into the living room and he opened his eyes and asked if the chicken was good? I laughed and said, ‘Yes, do you want some?” he nodded and smiled. I said, “do you want me to pull the meat off the bone for you?” he said, “yes, please.” I put some chicken in a bowl for him and gave him a fork. He ate almost two helpings. He perked up a little after. I cleaned up the kitchen and went upstairs to take a shower.

After my shower, I got changed into pjs and went back downstairs to kiss him on the forehead. I told him I was going to go lay down and I will see him when he comes up to bed.  I hope he feels better soon.

Unexpected

After the CLA I came home, and felt a pain in my left ear and my eyes were so itchy and watery. I was so exhausted. I felt like I was getting an ear infection and possibly getting sick. I wasn’t sure what was happening.

When I woke up this morning, it felt as if someone was stabbing the middle of my ear. I wrote an e-mail to Nancy and Phyllis and told them that I was taking a sick day to go to medexpress. I was having extreme ear pain and needed to go to medexpress. I knew it was poor timing because the Sociology Commencement was today. However, everything was done for it. The certificates were made, and things were complete. All someone had to do was hand out the certificates. I didn’t think it was going to be a major deal and no one plans to get sick.

At MedExpress they diagnosed me with an ear infection and an upper respiratory infection, as well as a sore throat. The doctor prescribed me Prednisone and a Z pack. I got both filled there instead of waiting at Giant Eagle. I was hesitant to take the prednisone because it will make me gain weight like crazy!

When I got home, I took the first dose and started my Z pack. I was hoping to fill better as soon as possible. I am on the go type person. I can’t just lay around I hate it. I called my mother in law and she says that I probably have just ran myself into the wall with how busy I have been. I did just finish up another semester of grad school (waiting for the grade from my one class), while doing an internship, and working full time. I have been so busy truly, but at the same time. I needed to take care of myself and I will admit I put self care on the back burner sometimes.

In the evening, Drew came home, and we spent the evening just relaxing. He felt bad that I was sick and had an ear infection. He made me soup and grilled cheese for dinner. He is always there for me.

Before we went to bed, I was watching Dirty Dancing and I had such a headache, but I wanted to wait and take Advil before I went to bed. I wasn’t sure when I was going to bed, so I didn’t take anything. Well the headache turned into a migraine, and it was the most intense migraine I ever had. Drew helped me upstairs and into the bathroom where I threw up everything in my body. I have never had migraine that bad.

The Great Gatsby Ballet

The Great Gatsby Ballet

Drew and I met up with my friend Jenna from work, and her husband Mattaeo at the Speakeasy in the Omni William Penn Hotel. It was so cool. The atmosphere was dimly lit and it was red and gold decor. It definitely reminded me of prohibition. The drink menus were leatherbound and made to look secretive.

When Jenna and Mattaeo arrived, we placed our order. I had a mint julep. Andrew had a John Collins. Jenna had prosecco, and Mattaeo had soda water. They are not big drinkers. We chatted about the ballet and how excited were to see it. We talked about how Drew and I started dating and how Jenna and Mattaeo met and started dating. It was cute their love story. They met while she was studying aboard in Italy.

After drinks, we cashed out and got ready to make the walk to the Benedum. It was so cold outside, and we both were in dresses and heels.  I couldn’t wait for this ballet. Once inside we said our goodbyes to Jenna and Mattaeo they were sitting in a different section.

Once we found our seats, which were much better than the seats we had for the Nutcracker. The lights dimmed and the curtain opened. The ballet had it’s moments where it differenced from the novel and the movie. I was able to follow, but if you didn’t know the story of The Great Gatsby, but then I can see how one may have found it difficult to follow.

At intermission, we met up with Jenna and Mattaeo. Jenna was loving it, but Mattaeo wasn’t sure how he felt about it. We didn’t see them after the ballet was over, but I was going to see Jenna at work on Monday. I couldn’t wait to recap with her.

After the ballet was over, and we made it home I went straight to bed. I was so tired. It has been a weekend!

Valentines Day

Valentines Day was a little different this year. I received my flowers on Sunday. Drew surprised me with a bouquet of pink roses. He knows I like any color rose, but red. I am not a red rose girl. I never have been. I am more of a pink roses girl, or any color rose, but red. IMG_0912.jpeg

On actual Valentines which was Thursday, I had class at night. However, we had plans over the weekend and my flowers came early.  🙂

I got Drew a valentines day card, as well. We were keeping it simple this year.

Great Gatsby Nails

I got my nails filled in Oakland on my lunch break. They were in such bad shape. I had an appt for Friday, but I already had so much planned, and homework that I didn’t want to wait. Drew was off on Friday, as well.

On my lunch break, I went to S & T nails in Oakland. I went for an Art Deco design on my ring finger, since we are going to The Great Gatsby ballet on Saturday. They look pretty good! I have been to that salon before.IMG_0953.jpg

After my nail appointment, I was 15 mins late coming back from lunch, but I made it up that day. I was stuck on the phone in my office until 5pm. I was so ready for Friday to get here!

After work, Drew texted me and asked if I could meet him in Hogwarts (the 1st floor of the Cathedral). He said, he had something to give me. 🙂 I love it when he surprises me.

When I arrived to the Cathedral, he handed me a Pitt University store shopping bag. I looked at him and said, “what is it?!” I took the bag from him and opened it. It was a great Gatsby tote!

I was so surprised. He knows The Great Gatsby is my favorite book! My absolute favorite book! He said, “I saw this and I thought of you. They only had one left. They also had a wristlet too, but I figured you would want the tote more.” I was so touched by it. It is the little things.

Also, today, is my parents 37 year marriage anniversary!

Christmas Eve Stomach Bug

This morning Drew was not feeling well. He was feeling queasy. He blamed it on the movie theater popcorn. We got out of bed and went downstairs. He sat down on the floor and looked a little spacey like he was going to vomit. He made his way to our powder room and up came the popcorn and the Diet Coke from the night before. I felt so bad for him. I rubbed his back until he came up. I flushed the toilet and got him cleaned up. He sat down on a chair in our dining room and I put a cold wash cloth on his face. I knelt down in front of him I said. I am going to call my mom and cancel. You just go up and rest. We can still open gifts later if you want. He said, “I am so sorry baby. it is Christmas Eve.” I said, don’t feel bad. We can still watch It’s a Wonderful life (its our tradition) and celebrate, but you need to rest. Then he went back upstairs to go to sleep.

I got a shower, and then to the store, grabbed some chicken noodle soup Gatorade, and some bread. I called mom to cancel and that we would see her tomorrow at Drew’s parents. I came home and he was back on the floor. I smiled and he smiled. I got him some Gatorade and wrapped the gifts for tomorrow. I had so much to do. I work better under stress, I guess. I did get a little emotional. I know it’s silly, but at there is so much prep for Christmas, and when the situation is less than ideal the emotions get to you. I didn’t want him to feel bad, or think it was his fault that he was sick. I felt bad for canceling with my parents. I know my mom looks forward to seeing us and the holidays. I was a bit of a mess, but it this too shall pass.

In the evening, we opened gifts together. He got me a white gold chain for my diamond pendant that he bought me when we first started dating. The chain that I previously had broke. I got him a robe with his initials stitched into it. He immediately put it on and wore it the rest of the evening. I was so happy he liked it. We still watched It’s a Wonderful Life Together.

It’s a Wonderful Life is my Christmas Eve tradition. It started when I was younger. My grandma would come up from Florida for Christmas. She would send her gifts up a head of time and then she would arrive a week before Christmas and go back to Florida right before New Years Eve, but Christmas always reminded me of her. She would watch old movies in the living room and around that time of the year It’s a Wonderful life would come on and I never realized the significance of the movie and the message until I got older, but I always remember the line at the end, “Every time a Bell rings an angel gets its wings.”

After grandma passed away, we would go to my parent’s friends’ house for Christmas Eve and we would eat dinner, and spend the evening there. While the adults would spend time talking at the dining room table, I would go into the living room and the movie It’s a Wonderful Life would be playing and there it was the line, “Every time a Bell Rings an Angel gets it’s wings….” I would smile and know that my grandma was still there at Christmas time. It’s sentimental I know.

Now every year on Christmas Eve, I make it a point to sit down and watch the movie It’s a Wonderful Life. Drew loves the movie. He loves taking part in the tradition. I take part in his traditions as well. Even though he wasn’t feeling well, I am glad we were together on Christmas.

Date Night the Nutcracker Ballet

Date Night the Nutcracker Ballet

This morning, I had hair appt then we were going to see the Nutcracker. I was so excited to go. I love the Nutcracker ballet. When I was younger, my mom took me to see it a couple times. She never really was into the ballet, but I thought it was so magical. When I was younger, I took dance classes. I always took ballet. I tried tap, jazz, and gymnastics, but ballet was my thing. When Drew and I were dating, we went to see the Nutcracker with our moms, but this was the second time seeing it together, but first time by ourselves as a married couple.

The evening started out at dinner at Ten Penny. Drew made reservations and everything. I was so happy. We had a both chose the steak and I had a couple glasses of wine. We talked about how things are slowing down, and we were ready for winter break. We talked about school and our accomplishments and what we want to accomplish in the future it was nice. I couldn’t wait for the ballet.
After dinner, we walked to the Benedum hand-in-hand. It felt like old times, like we were dating again. It was nice. Once inside the Benedum, we got our tickets at will call and then made our way to the wine. In order to take your wine, or your alcoholic drink of choice in to the theater you have to buy a Cultural trust cup that comes with a lid and a straw. You have to keep the lid on and the straw in the cup in order to enjoy your drink during the performance.

After we got our drinks, Drew bought some sugar-coated almonds and he also bought me a Christmas ornament, ballet slippers. I was so happy. We made our way downstairs to use the restroom before the performance.  A sugarplum fairy along with a photographer was placed cattycorner from where the restrooms are located. You could get your picture taken with her. Drew paid for me to get my picture with the sugarplum fairy. I was surprised. He is so thoughtful.
After my picture with the Sugarplum fairy, we made our way to our seats in the theater. We had pretty decent seats, orchestra center. The ballet began and it was magical. I was so glad he was there with me. So many times, have I been to the ballet and have seen women with their significant others, and I wondered what that would be like, having your significant other actually want to be there with you and I have to admit it was a good feeling. I am a lucky and blessed woman.
