The Great Gatsby Ballet

The Great Gatsby Ballet

Drew and I met up with my friend Jenna from work, and her husband Mattaeo at the Speakeasy in the Omni William Penn Hotel. It was so cool. The atmosphere was dimly lit and it was red and gold decor. It definitely reminded me of prohibition. The drink menus were leatherbound and made to look secretive.

When Jenna and Mattaeo arrived, we placed our order. I had a mint julep. Andrew had a John Collins. Jenna had prosecco, and Mattaeo had soda water. They are not big drinkers. We chatted about the ballet and how excited were to see it. We talked about how Drew and I started dating and how Jenna and Mattaeo met and started dating. It was cute their love story. They met while she was studying aboard in Italy.

After drinks, we cashed out and got ready to make the walk to the Benedum. It was so cold outside, and we both were in dresses and heels.  I couldn’t wait for this ballet. Once inside we said our goodbyes to Jenna and Mattaeo they were sitting in a different section.

Once we found our seats, which were much better than the seats we had for the Nutcracker. The lights dimmed and the curtain opened. The ballet had it’s moments where it differenced from the novel and the movie. I was able to follow, but if you didn’t know the story of The Great Gatsby, but then I can see how one may have found it difficult to follow.

At intermission, we met up with Jenna and Mattaeo. Jenna was loving it, but Mattaeo wasn’t sure how he felt about it. We didn’t see them after the ballet was over, but I was going to see Jenna at work on Monday. I couldn’t wait to recap with her.

After the ballet was over, and we made it home I went straight to bed. I was so tired. It has been a weekend!

Valentines Day

Valentines Day was a little different this year. I received my flowers on Sunday. Drew surprised me with a bouquet of pink roses. He knows I like any color rose, but red. I am not a red rose girl. I never have been. I am more of a pink roses girl, or any color rose, but red. IMG_0912.jpeg

On actual Valentines which was Thursday, I had class at night. However, we had plans over the weekend and my flowers came early.  🙂

I got Drew a valentines day card, as well. We were keeping it simple this year.

Great Gatsby Nails

I got my nails filled in Oakland on my lunch break. They were in such bad shape. I had an appt for Friday, but I already had so much planned, and homework that I didn’t want to wait. Drew was off on Friday, as well.

On my lunch break, I went to S & T nails in Oakland. I went for an Art Deco design on my ring finger, since we are going to The Great Gatsby ballet on Saturday. They look pretty good! I have been to that salon before.IMG_0953.jpg

After my nail appointment, I was 15 mins late coming back from lunch, but I made it up that day. I was stuck on the phone in my office until 5pm. I was so ready for Friday to get here!

After work, Drew texted me and asked if I could meet him in Hogwarts (the 1st floor of the Cathedral). He said, he had something to give me. 🙂 I love it when he surprises me.

When I arrived to the Cathedral, he handed me a Pitt University store shopping bag. I looked at him and said, “what is it?!” I took the bag from him and opened it. It was a great Gatsby tote!

I was so surprised. He knows The Great Gatsby is my favorite book! My absolute favorite book! He said, “I saw this and I thought of you. They only had one left. They also had a wristlet too, but I figured you would want the tote more.” I was so touched by it. It is the little things.

Also, today, is my parents 37 year marriage anniversary!

Christmas Eve Stomach Bug

This morning Drew was not feeling well. He was feeling queasy. He blamed it on the movie theater popcorn. We got out of bed and went downstairs. He sat down on the floor and looked a little spacey like he was going to vomit. He made his way to our powder room and up came the popcorn and the Diet Coke from the night before. I felt so bad for him. I rubbed his back until he came up. I flushed the toilet and got him cleaned up. He sat down on a chair in our dining room and I put a cold wash cloth on his face. I knelt down in front of him I said. I am going to call my mom and cancel. You just go up and rest. We can still open gifts later if you want. He said, “I am so sorry baby. it is Christmas Eve.” I said, don’t feel bad. We can still watch It’s a Wonderful life (its our tradition) and celebrate, but you need to rest. Then he went back upstairs to go to sleep.

I got a shower, and then to the store, grabbed some chicken noodle soup Gatorade, and some bread. I called mom to cancel and that we would see her tomorrow at Drew’s parents. I came home and he was back on the floor. I smiled and he smiled. I got him some Gatorade and wrapped the gifts for tomorrow. I had so much to do. I work better under stress, I guess. I did get a little emotional. I know it’s silly, but at there is so much prep for Christmas, and when the situation is less than ideal the emotions get to you. I didn’t want him to feel bad, or think it was his fault that he was sick. I felt bad for canceling with my parents. I know my mom looks forward to seeing us and the holidays. I was a bit of a mess, but it this too shall pass.

In the evening, we opened gifts together. He got me a white gold chain for my diamond pendant that he bought me when we first started dating. The chain that I previously had broke. I got him a robe with his initials stitched into it. He immediately put it on and wore it the rest of the evening. I was so happy he liked it. We still watched It’s a Wonderful Life Together.

It’s a Wonderful Life is my Christmas Eve tradition. It started when I was younger. My grandma would come up from Florida for Christmas. She would send her gifts up a head of time and then she would arrive a week before Christmas and go back to Florida right before New Years Eve, but Christmas always reminded me of her. She would watch old movies in the living room and around that time of the year It’s a Wonderful life would come on and I never realized the significance of the movie and the message until I got older, but I always remember the line at the end, “Every time a Bell rings an angel gets its wings.”

After grandma passed away, we would go to my parent’s friends’ house for Christmas Eve and we would eat dinner, and spend the evening there. While the adults would spend time talking at the dining room table, I would go into the living room and the movie It’s a Wonderful Life would be playing and there it was the line, “Every time a Bell Rings an Angel gets it’s wings….” I would smile and know that my grandma was still there at Christmas time. It’s sentimental I know.

Now every year on Christmas Eve, I make it a point to sit down and watch the movie It’s a Wonderful Life. Drew loves the movie. He loves taking part in the tradition. I take part in his traditions as well. Even though he wasn’t feeling well, I am glad we were together on Christmas.

Date Night the Nutcracker Ballet

Date Night the Nutcracker Ballet

This morning, I had hair appt then we were going to see the Nutcracker. I was so excited to go. I love the Nutcracker ballet. When I was younger, my mom took me to see it a couple times. She never really was into the ballet, but I thought it was so magical. When I was younger, I took dance classes. I always took ballet. I tried tap, jazz, and gymnastics, but ballet was my thing. When Drew and I were dating, we went to see the Nutcracker with our moms, but this was the second time seeing it together, but first time by ourselves as a married couple.

The evening started out at dinner at Ten Penny. Drew made reservations and everything. I was so happy. We had a both chose the steak and I had a couple glasses of wine. We talked about how things are slowing down, and we were ready for winter break. We talked about school and our accomplishments and what we want to accomplish in the future it was nice. I couldn’t wait for the ballet.
After dinner, we walked to the Benedum hand-in-hand. It felt like old times, like we were dating again. It was nice. Once inside the Benedum, we got our tickets at will call and then made our way to the wine. In order to take your wine, or your alcoholic drink of choice in to the theater you have to buy a Cultural trust cup that comes with a lid and a straw. You have to keep the lid on and the straw in the cup in order to enjoy your drink during the performance.

After we got our drinks, Drew bought some sugar-coated almonds and he also bought me a Christmas ornament, ballet slippers. I was so happy. We made our way downstairs to use the restroom before the performance.  A sugarplum fairy along with a photographer was placed cattycorner from where the restrooms are located. You could get your picture taken with her. Drew paid for me to get my picture with the sugarplum fairy. I was surprised. He is so thoughtful.
After my picture with the Sugarplum fairy, we made our way to our seats in the theater. We had pretty decent seats, orchestra center. The ballet began and it was magical. I was so glad he was there with me. So many times, have I been to the ballet and have seen women with their significant others, and I wondered what that would be like, having your significant other actually want to be there with you and I have to admit it was a good feeling. I am a lucky and blessed woman.

Christmas Decorating

One of the things I had to get used to when Andrew and I got married, was putting up the Christmas tree right after Thanksgiving! In my family, we didn’t put up the tree until at least the weekend after Thanksgiving. Andrew in his family put it up immediately after Thanksgiving. I don’t mind.
However, I am very organized and it is a process. We have to go down to the garage, get the tree, get the Christmas bins, and go through each bin first, see what we want to put out, then set up the tree, etc. There is a method for keeping this neat and tidy. I know in the future this may change when we have children and they will tear through everything, which is okay.
Image may contain: christmas tree After we set up the tree, we put everything in the basement until after Christmas is over, and then we will put everything back in the bins, and then back to the garage. We also made cookies and drank a little while we set up the tree. Andrew likes to put on Christmas music to help set the mood. I will be honest Christmas is nice, but it is not my favorite holiday. Halloween is my favorite holiday. I try to be supportive of him because he loves Christmas and decorating. However, our tree does look mighty pretty.

31st Birthday and 3 Year Anniversary

Today is my 31st  Birthday, as well as mine and Andrew’s 3rd wedding anniversary. I was not looking forward to going to work, but I did anyway.  On my way to my building, I called my dad first and he sang Happy Birthday to me. Then I called my mom and she did the same thing. It was sweet. After I got off the phone with them, I sat down at my desk and started to work. Nancy came in and wished me Happy Birthday.

A delivery man showed up with some flowers and asked for me. I smiled when I saw the flowers. I was so surprised. I had to take a quick picture. I was in the middle of a project with Nancy. I called Drew and thanked him for the flowers and we face timed for a minute so he could see them. He was glad I liked them. He is so sweet.

Around 9:30am, we ate a catered breakfast in the conference room and had a staff meeting. Linda called us together to go over somethings and some procedures. She also announced that it is my Birthday! Everyone wished me happy birthday and I also told them that today is also my 3rd Wedding Anniversary. They wished me Happy Anniversary, as well. It was sweet.

After breakfast, I sat down and got some work done, until 1:00pm. Andrew and I were going to lunch at Fuel and Fuddle. When he came to my office, Melanie and I were going over a project and getting things ready for the Fall schedule.  We are meeting again at 3:00pm. It was going to be a busy  afternoon.

At lunch, I didn’t behave with my Keto Diet. I ate nachos, and Drew had an appetizer and a burger. We will be good tomorrow. 🙂 It is a celebration today. We had a good lunch and didn’t want to go back work.

Around 3pm, I met with Melanie and got things straightened out and we had a plan. I went back to my office and it was about 4:00pm. I started packing up to leave. I had to go meet my TA for my Politics and History class. She was going to look over my paper and give me some pointers. I still need to get the rest of the paper looked over by my tutor. I am starting to get nervous. This is too much left to close to the weekend. I wanted to be able to put it past me before the weekend arrived.

When I arrived to the TA’s office, she wasn’t there. I waited around until about 5pm then walked back to Posvar. I received an e-mail from her. Her meeting ran late and she apologized. I said it’s okay. She said she would come by office tomorrow whenever I wanted. I said that I had nothing going on tomorrow and I look forward to seeing her. I am getting so anxious.

Around a quarter to 6pm, my friend Julia approached the bench I was sitting on outside of our class room. She and I complained about the semester and etc. I told her my issues with the TA and she said that sucks. This is why I try to get things done as early as possible.

Leadership class went well. We got our papers back, our group got a 48/50. Whew! I wasn’t sure what we were going to receive. I was glad that we did so well. We also started to give each other performance reviews. I had to review Julie. She was so cool with everything I said and agrees with me.  I felt relieved.

After class was over, I met with Drew outside my department. I told him about my grade. He said, babe you are kicking ass!  I said, “I know right!” We went into my office and got my flowers so I could take them home. I didn’t want to leave them at work.

When we got home, I got a shower and put on some pjs, then we opened cards together. It was a sweet moment. Then it was bed time. We both were so tired. It has been a crazy week, but I had a great birthday and anniversary.
