Leadership Conference Day 2

This morning I got up at 5:45am and got a shower and got ready for the second day of the conference. I also packed up. It was weird sleeping without Drew. I really am enjoying the time at Marietta and the conference, but I miss my husband. However, it was nice to get away for a bit.

IMG_1305 (1).jpegAfter I got dressed, I went down the hall to see if Sydney, Erica, and Dylan were awake or ready. Sydney answered the door half asleep. She said, it is 7am. I said, I know I just wanted to see who was awake and ready to head to breakfast. I am a morning person. I told them I will see them down at breakfast. I felt bad they weren’t ready. I  left their room and knocked on Jake and Zai’s door. Jake answered and said, morning. I said, morning! I told him that I just wanted to see if anyone was awake yet. He said, yup. I said, already I will see you at breakfast. I was beginning to think I was the only one. I took the elevator downstairs and it let me off at the lobby. I stepped out of the elevator. I looked down at my phone so I could text John. Then I looked up and saw him there. I approached him and said, “I was just about to text you. I thought I was the only one up and ready to go. I got some coffee and we went to see what they had for breakfast. It was typical hotel breakfast food.

Eventually everyone came down for breakfast, after we all ate we packed up the car. We were getting a little bit of a slow start to the day. We wanted to sit in on a couple sessions and eat lunch before we left.

When we arrived back on campus and to the conference, they were half way through the 9am sessions. We got coffee and waited for the 10am sessions to start. Sydney, Erica, and myself went to the presentation about how women can use certain strategies in Leadership to shift their impact in the workplace. It was pretty interesting. Then we went to the last presentation before lunch.

Lunch was stuffed peppers and flank steak it wasn’t as good as yesterday. After lunch, we made our way the car and started the journey back to Pittsburgh. The trip home went smooth and quick.

When we arrived back to Robert Morris University, we dropped everyone off and then we met up with Drew so he could meet John at the rental car place. I was glad to see Drew. We drove John back to campus and then Drew and I went home. We talked about the conference and the plans for the evening. Even though I was pretty tired, I still wanted to go over his parents.

When we got home, we brought my stuff in and hung out for a bit, then went to his parents for dinner. His dad made cauliflower crust pizza, and we snacked on chips and guacamole. for some reason, I was so hungry, and so tired. I had so much fun at the conference and can’t wait go back and explore Marietta!

Marietta Bound

Marietta Bound

This morning I woke up around 6:30am and got a shower. I was excited to go to Marietta. I had never been there before. I can’t remember the last time I was in Ohio. Drew dropped me off at RMU’s campus. I met the students at the Office of Student Activities and Leadership Development Office. I over packed. I had 4 bags and that included my purse. I don’t know how to pack light.

When John arrived with the rental car, we packed our suitcases in the trunk. It was like playing tetris. Zai and Jake sat in the back right before the trunk of the SUV. Dylan, Sydney, and Erica were in the second row of backseats, John drove, and I was passenger. I was so excited.

On the way to Ohio, we stopped at rest stop, so we could change into our dress clothes. Erica and I didn’t want to wear our dress clothes to travel in. We wanted to be comfortable until we arrived, or were close to arriving to the conference.

After we changed and got back into the car,  we listened to Britney Spears the whole way there. I was so happy. Sydney is a Britney fan like I am.  the next stop was Marietta, Ohio!

Once we arrived on to campus, it looked so cute and so historic. I didn’t really do any research on Marietta before arriving, but it definitely had a very chill vibe to it. It seemed like time moved slow there and it was relaxing. There was definitely something spiritually relaxing about the place. IMG_1263.jpeg

The buildings on the campus have this historical and colonial look to them. I like that look it almost feels like you are stepping into history. Robert Morris University’s campus is like that in some ways.

After registration, they served lunch and it was a nice buffet style table with linen table cloths. They had chicken, salad, green beans, and dinner rolls. It was decent food, as well.

After lunch, they had the key note speaker, was Marjorie Margolies. She is the President, of the Women’s Campaign International, and former U.S Congressperson. Her story is so interesting. She is also witty. I enjoyed her speech.

After the keynote speaker, we had to hurry up the elevator Robert Morris University was due to present at 2pm-2:50pm. Once we arrived the room, the students welcome participants to their presentation, and passed out flyers and a pen to each participant. They started their presentation on time, and I was so proud of them. They all worked so hard to get to this moment. They did so well! IMG_1267.jpeg

After the presentation, we went to some different presentations. Erica, Dylan, Jake, and myself went to the Millennials and Diverse Leadership session. It was okay. I didn’t find it that informative.

After the 3-3:50pm presentation, we planned to leave campus around 4pm. We wanted to get back to the hotel and check in and get freshened up before the evening happy hour.

We wanted to snap one picture as a group first.IMG_1276 (1).jpeg

When we arrived at hotel, we got our bags and checked in, I was so ready to get a shower and change. I needed to chill for a little. I was tired from the day already! John let us pick our room keys. I was 217, Jake was 218, Sydney, Erica, and Dylan were 223, and John was 335.

Once I opened the door to my room, it was a nice suite with two beds. I had never been in a hotel room by myself. It felt weird, but I could spread my things out. I laid on the bed and called Drew. We chatted for a bit, then I laid there for a second in the quiet. I didn’t bring any homework with me, and I didn’t turn on the TV. I just took in the quiet for a minute.

I got a shower and changed into jeans and a stripped top with my black flats. I dried my hair and then I got a text from Sydney and Erica. They said come over! I smiled and grabbed my make up bag and room key. I went down the hall and knocked on their door. Sydney did my eyebrows for me and then John texted me asking me what time we were meeting in the lobby to head to the happy hour? I said, 20 mins.

After the girls and Dylan were ready, I knocked on Jake and Zai’s door before going back into my room to grab my make up bag and Kate Spade clutch. I made sure I had all that I needed to head to the happy hour. We met up with John in the lobby and then we all got back into the SUV and drove to the Galley, where the happy hour was taking place.

The sky looked so pretty. It was still a bit too cold to be outside. I enjoyed hanging out with them and taking selfies. They are the coolest group of students I will probably ever work with. We stayed until about 10pm, then went back to the hotel. We had an early day in the morning and it was back home to Pittsburgh tomorrow afternoon. I will miss Marietta.

McDonough Dress Rehearsal

Today, I took off work to go to RMU. The students were going to practice their presentation in front of an audience of student affairs professionals and my previous English professor. I was finally able to wear my blue Calvin Klein business professional dress.

When I arrived at RMU, I got a coffee first before going to the Student Life office. I had to print out the handouts for the presentation. I printed out 20 just in case. I was so excited to see my previous English professor. She and I have kept in touch via e-mail over the years.

Finally, I walked into the classroom where we were having the rehearsal and some of the students were there already setting up the room and getting it ready for the presentation. I was proud of them. I gave them the handouts I printed and waited for everyone to show up. John showed up first and he greeted me. I could tell that he was ready for this presentation and excited for the students.

A few moments later, Dr. Pamboukian, previous English professor, showed up and we hugged. I haven’t seen her in so long. We sat next to each other and chatted before the presentation. Before the presentation got underway, John made an announcement and introduced me.

I felt the students did a good job. They still have a little bit of practicing to do and they need to slow down some, but other than that. I am proud of them. They did a great job. After the presentation, the audience gave the students some valued feedback and things to think about before the actual presentation day, which is Friday.

After everyone left, John and I met briefly with the students to go over what time to meet on Friday and how things are going to go on the day of the conference. I am ready to get out of Pittsburgh for a while and delete my work e-mail off my phone for a couple days. I need a break.

When I arrived back home, I changed and met my parents for lunch at Armstrong’s. While I waited for my parents to arrive, I worked on some notecards for the presentation that evening. I am working with this girl Haley. She and I are competing against two other students, who are also presenting on the same topic. The winner automatically gets an A, with no rubric. The loser gets a rubric and slightly lower grade, if not an A-.

After lunch, I went home again and got packed up to go to Pitt to meet up with Haley. When I arrived on campus, I met Haley at the Career Center and we worked on the presentation until it was time to go to class.

When we arrived in class, I took out my computer and checked my e-mail. We were like the 5th group to present. I was ready to get up there and get it over with.

Finally, it was our turn, Haley and I were first. We presented and I think it went really well. The judges had some questions for us, but I think other than that we were good. The next group went up and presented. I personally didn’t think theirs was as good as ours and they ran over the time limit.

After all the presentations were done, the judges decided the winner for each topic. Haley and I did not win. I was a bit bummed. We also received feedback on our themes paper. I agreed with most of the things he said, but I still got an A- so I am okay with it.

After class, I met up with Drew I told him that we didn’t win, but I think we did well. He said, I am sorry, that sucks. I smiled and shrugged.  We drove home and then when I got home, I heated up my lunch from earlier and split it with Drew.

After dinner, I got a shower and then we got ready to watch the season finale of Siesta Key. It was so good. I am ready for another Season!
